VIC-Gauge

Real-time displacement and strain data for mechanical testing

VIC-Gauge 2D and 3D are offered as standalone turnkey systems or may be added to any existing VIC-2D or VIC-3D system. VIC-Gauge uses the same optimized correlation algorithms to output the displacements and strains from user-defined locations in real time. Think of this tool as a set of virtual strain gauges or extensometers where data can be retrieved at multiple points and plotted live against time or analog inputs (such as load). Results are recorded at every analyzed point, and full-frame images may be captured concurrently for full-field post-analysis in VIC-2D or VIC-3D. The VIC-3D Real-Time module may also be utilized at the same time to view full-field DIC data live at up to 10 Hz.

Using the provided DAQ, DIC computed data from the virtual gauges/extensometers may be outputted via +/-10V analog outputs in real-time at the frame rate of the camera(s). This enables tests to be controlled via the DIC system’s computed strain values. VIC-Gauge also records this data and can capture images for full-field DIC analysis later. Displacements and strains from 50 microstrain to over 5000% and above are possible on specimens ranging in sizes from <1 mm to >10 m.

The VIC-Gauge system can easily be integrated with almost any tensile test frame that accepts analog inputs for strain control. The setup is simple, requiring only a single camera for in-plane displacement and strain data and stereo cameras for 3D measurements. No special illumination or lasers are ever required with DIC. The VIC-Gauge 2D and 3D systems include the following powerful features:

  • Fully integrated image acquisition control

  • Integrated DAQ system for synchronizing analog inputs and outputs

  • Add an unlimited number of virtual gauges to live images with real-time feedback

  • Fully adjustable strain gauge size

  • Output up to four gauges or extensometers via +/-10 V (scalable) analog channels

  • Output up to the max frame rate of the system (e.g. 2.8 MP @ 300Hz)

  • Save data to CSV file format

  • Display full-field real-time data up to 10 Hz using the VIC-3D Real-Time module

  • Concurrently save images for post-processing using VIC-2D or 3D

  • System may be configured for specimens ranging from 1 mm to >50 m

Our VIC-Gauge systems are widely used for material testing of materials such as metals, composites, polymers, rubber, and biological tissue. The system is capable of real-time strain measurements and can be interfaced with standard tension/compression test frames and controllers.

All systems are customized to your needs. Please contact us to discuss your applications in more detail.
